| Resumen: | El sino de Marcela, madre de Guzmán de Alfarache, es espejo quebrado donde se funden los tiempos de esplendor y decadencia, es reflejo de lo que fue, y podría haber logrado, y amargo anticipo de toda limitación ulterior que el hijo pícaro habrá de experimentar. Ya que la tragicidad del segundo abandono en el cual la madre quedará expósita y desamparada de toda protección filial reverbera culposa en la evocación del galeote escritor de una paráfrasis bíblica (Lucas, 23, 31) que él sólo juzga relevante a su respecto cuando cae, con muchos menos años, en desgracia: 'si así siento aqueste trabajo, si esto pasa en el madero verde, ¿qué hará el seco?' (II, 3, 8). En los estertores de la aventura biográfica narrada, la contextual y elusiva figuración de la anciana madre susurra que el esfumado de un discurso diferencial sobre su vejez debe acrisolarse en múltiples ángulos: la diferencia genérica, la diversa valoración de los constituyentes familiares y la distancia etaria de cada cual. Ya que en esta constelación de tensiones significantes lo que se dirime, con las viñetas de Marcela decrépita, son los márgenes de libertad y agencia que cada cultura está dispuesta a tributar a sus mayores. The fate of Marcela, mother of Guzmán de Alfarache, is a broken mirror where the times of splendor and decadence merge, it is a reflection of what she was, and could have achieved, and a bitter anticipation of any further limitation that the rogue son will experience.
